The Evolution of Data-Information-Knowledge-Wisdom in Nursing Informatics

Abstract: The data-information-knowledge-wisdom (DIKW) model has been widely adopted in nursing informatics. In this article, we examine the evolution of DIKW in nursing informatics while incorporating critiques from other disciplines. This includes examination of assumptions of linearity and hierarchy and an exploration of the implicit philosophical grounding of the model. Two guiding questions are considered: (1) Does DIKW serve clinical information systems, nurses, or both? and (2) What level of theory does DIKW occu… Show more

“…Reflecting on this definition, several publications on NI deal with the scope of practice, body of knowledge, taxonomy, knowledge areas, methodologies for enquiry, and theoretical underpinnings [see e.g. 4,8,[14][15][16][17][18][19] as well as core competencies [see e.g. [20][21][22][23].…”

“…In the DIKW model that is popularly adopted in nursing fields, information and knowledge are represented in a hierarchical order, such that the lower order form is a source for a higher order form (eg, information is a source of knowledge). 10 11 While the process of transforming information to knowledge in this research resembled the DIKW model, the information-knowledge relationship based on the epistemological viewpoint of constructivism in this research was found to be horizontal and non-hierarchical. Other than epistemological consideration, Alavi and Leidner 24 in the discipline of management, similarly reported that a back-and-forward process exists between information and knowledge, confirming the reciprocal dynamics between the two, as illustrated in figure 2 .…”

“…9 However, only a few attempts have been made to critically review or redefine them to ensure their relevancy to nursing studies. Moreover, the DIKW model that is dominant in the nursing field was developed with positivist viewpoints, 10 11 which hindered development of ideas regarding what information and knowledge are through other ontological and epistemological viewpoints (eg, constructivism).…”

“…Nurses constantly collect and analyse data from all contacts with the patient, whatever the setting. Data such as a weight or blood pressure is objective and does not include further (clinical) interpretation on its own [ 1 ]. Data only becomes meaningful if it can be interpreted within a certain context.…”

“…For instance, weight becomes relevant when a patient has lost a considerable amount of weight in a short time or when a patient is suspected to have anorexia. When data is placed within a context, it is defined as information [ 1 ].…”
