How do Korean nursing students build knowledge? A constructivist grounded theory study

Abstract: IntroductionNursing is a knowledge-intensive profession. Therefore, to cope with the demands of the nursing role, nursing students need to become competent in managing information to build nursing knowledge. However, nursing students’ knowledge building process is poorly understood. This research aimed to explore (1) nursing students’ dynamics of how they process nursing information for knowledge building and (2) nursing students’ learning context in South Korea for their knowledge building.MethodsA constructi… Show more

“…Second, focused coding is based on the categories established by checking and integrating the categories that emerge from the initial coding. Last, theoretical coding was used to unearth the core category and integrate the theoretical framework (Lee, Clarke, Carson, & Yang, 2018). Patton (2014) shows that a grounded theory pattern study proceeds from open to selective; or from low-to high-level concepts.…”

“…A fact attributable to the nursing courses involving application of theory to constant practice to build knowledge (Lee, et al, 2018). It also involves thinking outside the box to find solutions to problems.…”

“…This is particularly so with nursing education, which aims to build students' competence in real clinical contexts (Yang, 2012). Lee, Clarke, Carson, and Yang (2018b) asserted that 'applying' nursing students' existing knowledge to nursing practice is a high level of the nursing knowledge building process because the knowledge obtained through knowledge application is more memorable and useful for the construction of deep, sustained knowledge. Hence, the hands-on experience of applying existing knowledge to nursing practice during HF-SBL can support nursing students to construct quality nursing knowledge.…”
