The Evaluation of a Hybrid, General Chemistry Laboratory Curriculum: Impact on Students’ Cognitive, Affective, and Psychomotor Learning

Abstract: The laboratory has occupied an important place in the general chemistry curriculum for well over a century, despite the fact that many have voiced concern about its value and utility. In an effort to potentially increase capacity in our general chemistry courses, we developed and implemented a hybrid laboratory curriculum that consisted of alternating face-toface and virtual laboratory experiments. This study sought to better understand the impact that this hybrid approach had on students' cognitive, affective… Show more

“…They also save time and money and reduce chemical waste. However, all authors recommend a careful approach to changes and further research. As Hensen and Barbera mentioned, not only is students’ knowledge important in observing the impact of chemistry lessons, but students’ anxiety and emotional satisfaction, the usefulness of the lab and equipment, the instructor, etc. may also influence students’ affective outcomes more than the learning environment …”

“…There is a shift in educational culture to bring more open‐ended opportunities into teaching labs 1 . This can be seen in recent publications about course‐based undergraduate research in many areas of biology and chemistry 2–8 . Many instructors have been doing this in BMB lab courses for years.…”

“…One of the objectives of the assessment is to enable students to actively monitor and manage their learning processes (Xiao & Yang, 2019). Learning outcomes are changes that occur in students, both concerning cognitive, affective, and psychomotor aspects (Enneking et al, 2019).…”
