Recently, a number of salient crises have brought European politics to the fore like never before. This article presents an analysis of different types of criticism on and opposition towards the EU as present in media at the height of the Eurozone crisis in 2012. Using a four-fold typology, it looks… Show more

“…Current international studies primarily question (the framing of) and the tenor rather than the quality of crisis reporting of print media. Subjects include the societal consequences of the Corona pandemic (e.g., Eisenegger et al, 2020), migration and asylum issues (Blumell et al, 2020), or the European public sphere in EU member states in different contexts (Bijsmans, 2021).…”

“…Then, the success of populist, Eurosceptic (government) parties is a challenge for (economic policy) journalism: as soon as populist actors participate in public discourse, the negativity of reporting increases (Bobba & Seddone, 2018). This is particularly observable in times of debt crisis, as the EU is seen as an amplifier of the national crisis rather than part of the solution (Bakir et al, 2021), while at the same time more Eurosceptic parties are gaining influence (Bijsmans, 2021).…”

“…5 Drugo pak shvaćanje polazi od toga da je radi globalnih izazova potrebno raditi na koncentričnom jačanju i širenju onih ovlasti koje trebaju osigurati efikasno funkcioniranje zajedničkih europskih institucija. 6 Iako na prvi pogled slična, ova se dva pristupa značajno razlikuju. Prvo polazi od organizacijskog ustrojstva Unije kao zajednice država.…”

“…As Müller, Porcaro and von Nordheim (2018: 2) convincingly argue, 'Disagreement about the causes and potential remedies appears to be the major obstacle to creating a more stable and crisis -proof set -up.' In addition, the Eurocrisis 'opened up the EU policy making process to wide -spread debate over the form that both EU policy and institutional development should take' (FitzGibbon 2013in Bijsmans 2021; similarly also Borriello -Crespy 2015), with the current ongoing debate about the reform of Eurozone macroeconomic governance serving as a case in point (see, for instance, Puetter 2021 on this). Besides, there is a widespread belief that the 'fragilities and imbalances that primed the monetary union for this crisis are still present' (Baldwin -Giavazzi 2015: 18).…”
