The European Study of Epidemiology and Treatment of Cardiac Inflammatory Disease (ESETCID)

Abstract: Diagnosis of myocarditis has improved with the application of new techniques such as immunohistochemistry, polymerase chain reaction, in situ hybridization and Southern blot in endomyocardial biopsies. Treatment of inflammatory heart disease is still difficult and not yet validated by a study with patient numbers sufficient to allow statistical analysis. The European Study of Epidemiology and Treatment of Cardiac Inflammatory Disease (ESETCID) addresses problems of aetiology, pathogenesis and specific treatmen… Show more

“…[8][9][10][11]16,17,[26][27][28] Attempts to treat DCM and myocarditis using immunosuppressive and antiviral agents have been reported. [29][30][31][32][33] In the present study, examination of myocardial specimens obtained by PLV, showed mononuclear cell infiltration in all of the specimens. Quantitative and qualitative analyses using leukocyte surface markers revealed the presence of inflammatory cell infiltrates (active myocarditis) in some cases.…”

“…13 Apoptosis was identified by the terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase-mediated dt/TP-biotin nick end-labeling method (TUNEL). Sections were processed in accordance with the method of Gavrieli et al 14 An index was calculated as the number of apoptosis-positive myocytes divided by the total number of myocytes, multiplied by 100.…”

“…Each of the phases may be separate or chronologically overlapped. The original invading virus may often persist well into the second phase and the third phase, thus, it can cause cardiac failure not only by ongoing replication with the attendant direct immune-mediated injury, 19) could provide information regarding accurate diagnosis, effective prognostication, and appropriate therapy.…”
