The Ergodic Capacity of the Multiple Access Channel Under Distributed Scheduling - Order Optimality of Linear Receivers

Abstract: Consider the problem of a Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) Multiple-Access Channel (MAC) at the limit of large number of users. Clearly, in practical scenarios, only a small subset of the users can be scheduled to utilize the channel simultaneously. Thus, a problem of user selection arises. However, since solutions which collect Channel State Information (CSI) from all users and decide on the best subset to transmit in each slot do not scale when the number of users is large, distributed algorithms for us… Show more

“…Note that w b has to be orthogonal to h w and h c ; and w c,1 has to have non-zero projections on h w and h c , which means it has to be orthogonal to h b . Since the probability that h b falls in the space spanned by h w and h c is zero, the number of antennas at Alice is no less than three [41], [42].…”

“…This ratio is distributed as the minimum of L 2 − 1 i.i.d. uniform [0, 1] random variables [32, Lemma 3.2], [33]. This is since the ratio can be interpreted as the proportion of the waiting time from the first arrival to the L 2 arrival of a Poisson process.…”

“…However, for i.i.d. Chisquare random variables, the convergence of its maximum to the Gumbel distribution with parameters c K and d K is quite slow [45]. Specially, for a large M , Γ(M ) is an excessively large number, i.e., Γ(20) = 1.2165 × 10 17 , thus d K may not be positive for a moderate value of K. Therefore, we calculate new normalizing constants of Ξ K (1) by approximating Chi-square random variables as Gaussian ones.…”
