The Epley maneuver for the treatment of benign paroxysmal positional vertigo

Abstract: In recent years, different forms of physical therapy have been proposed for the treatment of benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV). These mainly consist of maneuvers aiming to reposition and disperse free-floating endolymph particles in the posterior semicircular canal. We report our experience with one of these procedures, the Epley maneuver (EM), in treating 30 cases of BPPV. Twenty-six patients (87%) were cured, while four (13%) did not respond to treatment. These results are similar to those reported… Show more

“…Uma única aplicação da manobra de Semont tem índices de cura de aproximadamente 50% 17 , passando a 97% se a manobra for realizada várias vezes 18 . Para a manobra de Epley, os índices de cura variam de 87 a 100% 13,19,20 . Cohen e Jerabek ao comparar as duas manobras, não observaram diferença significativa entre o índices de cura 21 .…”

“…There is a latency of a few seconds between the head movement and the symptoms, and vertigo ceases after about 30 s. The Hallpike maneuver confi rms the diagnosis [8] . BPPV is successfully treated with particle-repositioning procedures [9][10][11][12] or habituation exercises [13][14][15] . However, it is not clear whether knowledge about assessment and treatment for BPPV is common in primary health care.…”
