The ‘EpiEnlist’ project: a dermo‐epidemiologic study on a representative sample of young Italian males. Prevalence of selected pigmentary lesions

Abstract: The epidemiological data of the skin conditions considered in the present study can be considered roughly in agreement with those reported in the available surveys. Because they were obtained in a large sample of Italian young males from the general population, they can be useful for therapeutic and preventive interventions by the public health organizations.

“…Similarly to the results of this study, segmental vitiligo showed a low frequency of 5%. 9 Vtiligo affecting less than 25% of the body surface area was more prevalent in another study .However, there was a higher prevalence of vitiligo involving more than 50% of the body surface area in this study as compared with results from previous studies, where this frequency occurred in 5% and 7% of the cases. 11.21 The higher frequency of the universal type in this study may be due to the fact the study population was sought in a referral center of Dermatology, thereby attracting more severe cases of the disease.…”

Autoimmune diseases mostly associated with vitiligo were pernicious anemia, ranging from 1.8% to 2.3%, and rheumatoid arthritis, varying from 0.38% to 14%, which are higher than the rates found in the study population.…”

“…10 The most common type of vitiligo was vitiligo vulgaris (51%), similar to other studies, followed by acrofacial vitiligo (39%). 9,11,12 In children, focal vitiligo was found to be the most common type. 13 This is probably due to seeking early medical treatment, immediately after the appearance of the first vitiligo lesion in children.…”
