Reproducibility of Dermoscopic Features of Congenital Melanocytic Nevi

Abstract: Background: The dermoscopic features of congenital melanocytic nevi (CMN) have recently been described, and some structures have been proposed as distinctive of these moles. Objective: The aim of our study was to evaluate the agreement between observers, i.e. the reproducibility, in the identification of these features. Method: Fifty-two CMN, randomly selected from 127 male subjects carrying at least 1 CMN, were examined by a 1st medium-experienced observer. The image recording was performed according to the d… Show more

“…14 A few studies concerning intraobserver agreement in the identification of dermoscopic features have been reported with good reproducibility and satisfactory intra-and interobserver agreement. 15,16 However, many of these studies included analyses performed by only one investigator. In our study, intraobserver agreement was calculated from two different investigators, with an excellent correlation between them in almost all dermoscopic color-based patterns.…”

“…The differential diagnosis of pigmented lesions of the nipple includes melanocytic nevus, nevoid hyperkeratosis of the nipple, reactive hyperkeratosis, melanosis of the areola, melanoma and pigmented Paget’s disease [1,2,3,4,8]. Dermoscopy and RCM have been described only in few of these conditions.…”

“…There are a few differential diagnoses regarding pigmented lesions on the nipple: melanocytic nevi, nevoid hyperkeratosis, reactive hyperkeratosis, melanosis of the areola, melanoma and Paget's disease. [29][30][31][32][33] Dermoscopy and also confocal reflectance microscopy have not been described for pigmented lesions of the nipple yet and, therefore, histopathology remains gold standard in suspicious lesions at the moment. 34 However, in our experience, nevi of the nipple mostly present with a reticular or structureless pattern of dark brown color (Fig.…”
