The Environmental and Human Effects of Ptaquiloside-Induced Enzootic Bovine Hematuria: A Tumorous Disease of Cattle

Abstract: In this review, we address the major aspects of enzootic bovine hematuria and have placed special emphasis on describing the etiology, human health implications, and advanced molecular diagnosis of the disease.Enzootic bovine hematuria (EBH) is a bovine disease characterized by the intermittent presence of blood in the urine and is caused by malignant lesions in the urinary bladder. This incurable disease is a serious malady in several countries across many continents. Accurate early-stage diagnosis of the dis… Show more

“…Additional suspective components are also present, like quercetin, isoquercetin, ptesculentoside, caudatoside, astragalin, and tannins. 68 In addition, enzootic bovine hematuria has been linked to bracken fern consumption and its ptaquiloside content. One report links at least 50% of these cases to bovine papillomavirus type 2 infections.…”

“…PTA is observed in the whole tissue of BF, low in roots and spores, and high in edible parts, crosiers [ 21 , 22 ]. Fortunately, PTA is degraded to a stable form by hydrothermal methods [ 23 , 24 , 25 ] and is expected to exhibit reduced toxicity.…”

“…1 In normal conditions, BPV infection can be asymptomatic and the warts, when they exist, can easily regress to normality. 2 However, depending on the virus type and environmental cofactors, such as the ingestion of bracken fern, 3,4 the lesions can progress into malignant warts. 2,5 The evolution of these lesions into a cancerous state is an alarming sign to countries that rely on livestock.…”
