The Brazilian period fertility rate (PTFR) dropped from six to 1.8 between 1950 and 2010. Due to the shifts in the timing of fertility, the PTFR might be providing a misleading picture of fertility levels. Moreover, the national average hides important educational differences, as in 2010, the PTFR was 2.3 among the lower educated, whereas it had fallen to 1.5 among the higher educated. The consequences of these changes for the cohort total fertility rate (CTFR) a measure that is free from tempo distortionsand for the educational differences in completed fertility have not been previously studied. Due to the scarcity of time series of fertility rates, the application of CTFR forecasting methods outside of high-income countries (HICs) has been rare, and has been largely limited to population-level analysis. We use four Brazilian censuses to forecast the CTFR for the total population and by educational level using rates reconstructed with indirect techniques. The results of four forecasting methods indicate that the CTFR is likely to decline to 2.1 for the 1980 cohort, and to 1.9 for the 1984 cohort.Educational differences in the CTFR are likely to remain starkat between 0.7 and 0.9 depending on the cohort and the methodand to be larger than they are in HICs with comparable CTFRs. We show how the CTFR can be forecasted, including by educational level, in settings with limited data. Finally, we call for more research on the educational differences in completed fertility in low-and middle-income countries.

Introdução: A gravidez na adolescência é um evento relativamente comum na América Latina e Caribe. A literatura demonstra que a ocorrência desse fenômeno pode estar associada a diversos impactos negativos na vida das adolescentes. Objetivo: A proposta deste estudo foi descrever algumas das principais características das adolescentes entre 10 e 14 anos que são mães. Métodos: Foram utilizados dados dos Censos Demográficos de 2000 e 2010. Foram selecionadas as informações de 33.346 adolescentes em 2000 e 36.471 em 2010 que reportaram ter tido pelo menos um nascido vivo.. Resultados: Os dados mostraram que em sua maioria essas adolescentes são negras, vivem casadas ou em união informal e residem no Norte ou Nordeste do país. Conclusão: Os resultados aqui apresentados demonstram a urgência de se entender esse fenômeno de forma que o poder público possa realizar ações que evitem a ocorrência desses nascimentos e promovam a saúde sexual e reprodutiva das adolescentes.

While Brazil has high rates of adolescent fertility for its below-replacement total fertility rate, we know little about the causal effects of adolescent childbearing and adolescent union formation for women's education. In this paper, we examine unique data from the 2013 School-to-Work Transitions Survey to address the consequences of adolescent childbearing and adolescent union formation on educational outcomes of Brazilian young women. We apply several analytical strategies to address the endogeneity between adolescent childbearing and educational outcomes. Our findings suggest that childbearing during the teenage years is detrimental to the educational attainment of Brazilian women, and that educational disadvantages persist once we take into account mother's selection into adolescent childbearing. The penalty for adolescent mothers ranges from -1.66 to -1.80 fewer years of schooling and from 41 to 35 percent difference in the probabilities of graduating from high school. Additional findings show that marital unions among adolescent mothers have a compounding role at further hindering women's educational progress. Combined, our findings suggest that young mothers, particularly those in a marital union, face additional layers of disadvantages, demonstrating that early family formation is a meaningful stratifier for women in an already highly-stratified society.
