The emergence of “truth machines”?: Artificial intelligence approaches to lie detection

Abstract: This article analyzes emerging artificial intelligence (AI)-enhanced lie detection systems from ethical and human resource (HR) management perspectives. I show how these AI enhancements transform lie detection, followed with analyses as to how the changes can lead to moral problems. Specifically, I examine how these applications of AI introduce human rights issues of fairness, mental privacy, and bias and outline the implications of these changes for HR management. The changes that AI is making to lie detectio… Show more

“…These are, first of all, spheres associated with existential issues. For example, an important issue is whether one should use artificial intelligence to determine if a person is lying (Oravec, 2022), or whether artificial intelligence may serve as an autonomous weapon (International Committee, 2020). Defining such spheres at international, national, and local levels, formulating legal prohibitions, and creating law-enforcement mechanisms is one of the priority tasks for Human-Centered AI.…”

“…AI's salience in this revolution is underpinned by its capacity to process and interpret human movements, a capability that metamorphoses mere physical gestures into coherent commands for devices. 42,56 Beyond mere gesture recognition, AI also serves as the lynchpin for virtual assistants such as Siri and Google Assistant, facilitating their control through voice and gesture symbiotically. 43,44 Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR) platforms further underscore the transformative power of melding AI and gesture control.…”
