an Intersectional approach to research on Unemployment abstract: This article critically evaluates the use of an intergroup intersectional perspective in quantitative research on social inequalities and thereby helps to obtain deeper knowledge of the sources of inequality that impact chances of unemployment in the Czech Republic and contribute to the discussion of the benefits and limitations of using this approach. The advantage offered by the intersectional perspective is illustrated in an analysis of EU-SILC data. The analysis combines an additive and multiplicative (intersectional) approach to research on unemployment in the Czech Republic. An additive model of binary logistic regression is accompanied by binary logistic regression models with interactions. The aim is to identify the factors and the social positions that result from the interaction of these factors that together influence chances of unemployment. The analysis shows that one source of inequality in interaction with other sources can have an entirely different impact on chances of unemployment than individual factors have on their own. An example is the interaction of gender and parenthood, which creates different social positions for different subpopulations. Motherhood, fatherhood, and the absence of the need to care for a young child can generate specific (dis)advantages for women or men also depending on the nature of their employment.

“…Ukraine is far from being the only country that has seen the rise of resistance to the progression of sexual rights and diversity politics in the Western world as well as across the globe. As an increasing number of groups and actors in Europe (and elsewhere) have united their efforts in fighting Western "feminist" and "homosexual propaganda," a growing body of literature has addressed the evolution of these movements and threats they could pose to liberal democracies (Kováts 2017;Kuhar and Paternotte 2017;Pető 2017). Many scholars agree on the fact that these counter-movements use concepts of "gender," "homosexuality," or "LGBTI rights" as an empty signifier (Kuhar and Zobec 2017) or as a common abstract enemy they can successfully integrate into a specific political protest (Kováts 2018).…”

Against the backdrop of the conflict with Russia and growing approximation with the European Union (EU), the LGBTI movement in Ukraine seemed to have achieved some of its political goals, such as introducing changes in legislation and holding peaceful equality marches in Kyiv. At the same time, the last decade has seen a growing number of homophobic attacks by right-wing groups across the country, while sociological surveys have shown an increased level of homophobic attitudes. The article questions the factors that caused the mentioned outcomes and examines the role that the EU, Russia, and national stakeholders played in these transformations.
