“…Consistent with our observations, the response obtained by scotopic electroretinogram (ERG) studies in neonatal rabbits shows that the development of scotopic vision only achieves full maturation at 4-5 weeks after eye opening (Reuter et al, 1971;Gorfinkel et al, 1988). Specifically, the ERG b-wave appears at P11 (Reuter et al, 1971), while ERG oscillatory potentials, which represent the light-driven activities of inner retinal neurons, are not detectable until after the first two postnatal weeks (Gorfinkel et al, 1988). These findings suggest that the functional development of the primary rod pathway via AII-ON CB gap junction coupling begins after eye opening, possibly in the third postnatal week, as we found that rabbit AII ACs showed adult-like gap junction coupling patterns in P21-22 retinas (Fig.…”

“…Electrophysiologically, the rabbit ERG b wave can be recorded between postnatal day 11 and 18 (Reuter et al, 1971). The visual evoked response is diurnally cyclical (Bobbert and Brandenburg, 1978).…”
