Malaysia is on track to become an aged nation by 2030, with older people accounting for 15% of the total population. Changes in a country’s demographic composition of older people have a significant socioeconomic impact, given that medical and long-term care services account for the majority of government spending. Promoting an active and healthy lifestyle among older people has become critical to their ability to live independently. Social participation among older persons is one way to encourage active ageing. The purpose of this study was to learn more about older people’s preferred social activities to better understand their preferences to promote sustainable cities and communities (SDG 11). A qualitative research approach was used in the study by using a semi-structured interview with a total of 41 older persons. Three states including Penang, Selangor and Kuala Lumpur were selected as the main location to reach the targeted participants in the study. All the older participants were selected based on the inclusion criteria including; (1) older persons aged 60 years and above; (2) older persons who participated in the social activities; (3) activities centres located at three urban areas including Penang, Kuala Lumpur and Selangor. The findings of the study found five (5) types of preferred activities among older persons: (1) Leisure learning activities; (2) Religious activities; (3) Community-related activities; (4) Home-based activities; and (5) Job-related activities. In conclusion, there is an apparent need to provide aged–friendly areas and create a good built environment to assist the older persons, in keeping with the national agenda to achieve aged nation status and achieve the SDGs.

Along with the continuous growth of the elderly population, Malaysia projected to become an ageing nation by 2030. The Retirement Villages are a Restricted Ageing Community that offers a complete range of services supplying the diverse housing demand of the elderly (seniors) generation. The World Health Organization (WHO) identified four broad domains universally relevant to the Quality of Life: physical and psychological health, social relationships, and environment. This study aims to provide an in-depth overview of the Retirement Villages in Malaysia. The objectives of this study are sets as follows: (i) To define the Elderly Quality of Life (QoL), and (ii) To determine the generational preferences features of Retirement Village in Malaysia. The Malaysian housing generations involved in this study are the Baby Boomers, Generation X (Gen-X), Generation Y (Gen-Y), and Generation Z (Gen-Z). With a mixed-methods approach, the derived findings revealed that preferred generational features of Retirement Villages are diverse for each main feature; (i) Location; (ii) Services; (iii) Design Criteria; (iv) Physical Environment; and (v) Social Activities. This study contributes more understanding of the main actors of property development and the real estate industry players on the preferred features for Retirement Villages in the Malaysian context.

The elderly population in Malaysia are multiplying, and older people's reliance on social services such as elderly institutions has increased. Mental health problems especially depression is one of the main problems with institutionalized elderly. This study aims to determine the prevalence and associated risk factors of depression among the elderly in all three state-run institutions in Sabah. A multi-centred, cross-sectional study was conducted on residents of all three state-run elderly institutions in Sabah (N=110). All residents that fulfil the criteria were included in the study through a self-administered set of validated questionnaires that measure perceived social support, loneliness, and depression. Statistical Package for the Social Sciences by IBM (IBM SPSS) v25 was used and Chi-Square and logistic regression for analysis. The prevalence of depressive symptoms is at 60.9%. The independent risk factors for depression in residents were male gender (OR=4.09, 95%CI=1.55, 10.79), perceived poor health status (OR=6.63, 95%CI=2.49, 17.65), and loneliness (OR=6.12, 95%CI=2.02, 18.53). Depression is prevalent among the elderly in the state-run institutions in Sabah, Malaysia. A comprehensive mental health screening program needs to be implemented for the elderly institutions along with adequate training for staff to handle mental health issues in the elderly.
