The Effects of Vasoactive Intestinal Peptide on Dura Mater Nitric Oxide Levels and Vessel-Contraction Responses in Sympathectomized Rats

Abstract: Nitric oxide (NO) and neurogenic inflammation in dura mater due to nociceptor activation has been implicated for pathophysiology of primary headache disorders. Development of migraine has also been observed in patients treated with ganglion blockage for sympathetic reflex dystrophy. Vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP) is an antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and neuroprotective neuropeptide. This study is intended to investigate the effects of VIP on dura mater NO levels and vessel-contraction responses in sympat… Show more

“…Our results show that short-term sympathectomy induces activation of ipsilateral trigeminal neurons and increases the number of mast cells in the dura mater. Previously it was shown that sympathectomy also increased dura mater NO levels (Tore et al, 2010).…”

“…In a previous study, VIP modulated hypotension in sepsis, prolonging survival time (Tunçel and Tore, ). Systemic administration of VIP in sympathectomized rats increased aortic contraction responses and decreased dura mater NO levels to control levels (Tore et al, ). VIP also promotes the survival of sympathetic neuroblasts, enhances differentiation, and regulates neural tube closure during embryogenesis (Pincus et al, ).…”

“…The sympathetic nervous system inhibits the trigeminal system (Peroutka, 2004). Superior cervical ganglionectomy increased dura mater NO levels, c-fos expression in the spinal trigeminal nucleus caudalis (TNc) and induced degranulation of meningeal mast cells (Tore et al, 2010; Kilinc et al, 2015). Yildiz et al (2007) measured a facial sympathetic skin response that indicated the activation of the sympathetic nervous system.…”
