The Effects of Trunk Stabilization Exercise Using Swiss Ball and Core Stabilization Exercise on Balance and Gait in Elderly Women

Abstract: Purpose:The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of trunk stabilization exercise using swiss ball and core stabilization exercise on balance and gait in elderly women. Methods:Subjects 19 elderly women were randomly divided by the swiss ball exercise group (n=10) and the core stabilization exercise group (n=9). In a period of 4 weeks, they took trunk stabilization exercise using swiss ball and core stabilization exercise for 60 minutes 3 times a week. Balance and gait were measured by Functional… Show more

“…A few studies promoted older adults' functional improvement through 4 weeks of exercise. Choi et al (2012) conducted a 4-week core-stabilizing exercise with a Swiss ball in the elderly and reported that the core-stabilizing exercise significantly affected their balance and gait. In addition, Lee et al (2013) Such findings imply that the reduced COP area in the present study is an indication that the movement of the COP of the subjects was minimized from week 4 to week 8 of core-strengthening training.…”

“…Trunk stabilization exercises provide the efficiency of movements by increasing spinal and pelvic stability in performing functional postures and exercises (GarciaVaquero et al, 2012), and are useful for maintaining balanced postures, improving muscle strength, and preventing musculoskeletal chronic diseases caused by aging (Choi et al, 2012). In addition, the simultaneous activation of trunk muscles through trunk stabilization exercises increases spinal stability by providing segmental fixation to the structure around the spine against large loads (Marshall et al, 2005;Vera-Garcia et al, 2007;Ha et al, 2013).…”
