Abstract: Air pollution control has been incorporated into the performance appraisal system of local officials in China. It is necessary to explore the underlying reasons behind China's air pollution. In this study, we measure the effects of different types of official turnover (OT) on air quality using a sharp regression discontinuity model, and collect the appointment information of mayors and municipal party secretaries from 333 cities in China between December 2013 and January 2018. “…The reason is that we consider lagged factors when measuring the EPOT; additionally, our research is based on the EPOT in prefecture-level cities, and more than 99% of the new directors in our sample come from a local city or a city or county under the jurisdiction of a local city. Chen and Gao (2020) believe that due to their “geographic” advantages, locally transferred officials do not completely sever their established political connections, which weakens the effect of policy uncertainty. Therefore, for local companies, the duration of environmental policy uncertainty is relatively short and the impact on GI activities is also temporary.…”

As an implicit factor shaping promotion incentives (Li and Zhou, 2005;Shi et al, 2018), EPOs' age may also affect the effect of the EPOT on corporate green behavior.…”

“…RDD has been widely applied to the assessment research of environmental policy effectiveness [see ( 27 , 31 , 32 )]. Following prior studies ( 12 , 27 , 33 ), this study utilizes sharp regression discontinuity (SRD) model to investigate the effect of CEPI on air pollution of cities in China. According to the principle of SRD and related literature ( 23 ), the specific SRD model is set as follows:…”

“…At the same time, the traditional Chinese concept that "Every new sovereign brings his own courtiers.
