The effects of systematic educational interventions about nasogastric tube feeding on caregivers' knowledge and skills and the incidence of feeding complications

Abstract: The results of this study underlined the importance of developing nasogastric tube-related nursing interventions and educational strategies for clinical nurses, home care nurses and caregivers. The research tool used here may serve as a reference for assessing the technical operations of healthcare professionals and the knowledge and skills of caregivers.

“…A study measuring patient readiness found that the use of either faceto-face instruction or a written pamphlet, in addition to the usual preoperative clinic visit, was superior to a preoperative visit alone [19]. Also, improvement in sputum collection occurred with the use of a brochure [23], and the addition of a brochure to systematic nursing education for caregivers of patients with nasogastric tubes improved the ability of the caregivers to care for their patients [24]. It has been previously shown that EM in the form of pamphlets or brochures is only useful if the patient is motivated to learn and know more.…”

“…The authors attribute their better results regarding other series of patients to the continuity of care by the same nutrition team [136]. In a quasi-experimental research in Taiwan with pretest/post-test evaluations in 233 patients with nasogastric tube feeding, systematic nursing intervention, including comprehensive educational pamphlets and video education in comparison to routine education, significantly improved the knowledge and skills of primary caregivers and decreased the incidence of 3-months complications [137]. In the absence of adequate gastrostomy aftercare, 6-months hospital readmission rates are as high as 23%.…”

“…Participants in this study described a variety of problems associated with the tube and the strategies that they employed to manage them. Other studies have reported a wide range of complications (Chang et al , Correa et al , Halliday et al , Lim et al , Rogers et al ) with blockage and infection being cited as common in adults (Boland et al, ). A recent survey of home carers in Singapore reported constipation, abdominal distension and vomiting as common complications (Lim et al, ).…”
