The effects of rates of nitrogen application on seven perennial ryegrass varieties

Abstract: Jealott's Hill with seven perennial ryegrass varieties to study their response to nitrogen in terms of dry matter (DM) and crude protein (CP) yields. AbstractThe dry matter and crude protein production of the perennial ryegrass varieties S24, S23, Premo, Houba, Barlenna, Melle and Sceempter Pasture at annual nitrogen application rates of 212,425, 637 and 1062 kg ha"' were studied for the years 1972-74 inclusive. The DM and CP response curves for the variety Melle were steeper than those for other varieties tes… Show more

“…Cv . Melle Pasture has given higher yields of dry matter and N than S .23 at very high levels of applied N (Lee et al ., 1977), but gave lower yields of both at low levels of applied N (Alcock & Harvey, 1985) .…”

“…These results confirm the promising yield from cv. Vigor noted in the standard United Kingdom cutting trials (Lee et al 1977), and confirmed the good persistence expected from cv. Vigor (Camlin 1981).…”

“…The association of yield and nitrogen concentration showed a similar trend over nitrogen levels to that obtained using simple correlation. Yield and soluble-carbohydrate concentration were positively related, and nitrogen and soluble-carbohydrate concentration inversely related, when the effects of the remaining attribute were eliminated.Data extracted from Lee et al (1977) confirmed that yield and nitrogen concentration for varieties under field conditions varied with level of nitrogen application in a similar manner to genotypes in the controlled growth room. The variety (Melle) could be characterized as being particularly efficient.…”
