Four varieties of Lolium perenne with similar flowering dates bred over a 30 year period were grown in an orthogonal plot trial with two contrasting harvesting frequencies and three levels of fertiliser (0 .2, 0 .4 and 0 .6 t/ha of N annually) . In the second harvest year, the nitrogen (N) content of herbage at each harvest was determined and the yields of N calculated . The newest variety (Ba 10761) gave a 20% higher mean annual yield of N than the oldest (S .321) . The influence of variety in increasing the ratio of N recovered : N applied was as great or greater than the influence of harvesting frequency or level of applied N . There were small differences between varieties in N content (%N), N content being inversely related to N yield .

Plant breeding and the merit-testing of grass cultivars in multi-site small-plot studies should be supported with some animal production trials if plant improvement is to maintain credibility and remain focussed on feasible, commercially relevant goals. Lactating animals are the most sensitive test animals. Animal production results from cultivar comparisons are considerably influenced by the system(s) of management used. Between-cultivar differences are rarely detected unless pasture is utilised to a high degree. The economic benefits flow mainly from a reduced need for supplementary feed, or in increased carrying capacity. A range of rates of stocking, or a variable stocking policy dependent on minimal sward height or some other objective basis needs to be employed. Where animal production trials have been conducted, they have mainly focussed on cultivars emanating from those plant improvement programmes aimed at improving nutritive value. Given this limitation the reports reviewed provide evidence that grass improvement programmes have raised the feeding value of pasture considerably.

The associations between yield, nitrogen and soluble-carbohydrate concentration within S. 23 perennial ryegrass were investigated at three levels of nitrogen application. Controlled growth room conditions were used.The simple correlation between yield and nitrogen concentration was negative at the low rate of nitrogen application, not present at the intermediate rate of nitrogen and positive though not significant at the high rate of nitrogen. Yield and soluble-carbohydrate concentration were only correlated (positively) at the low nitrogen rate.At low nitrogen there were ' efficient' genotypes with relatively high yield and low nitrogen concentration. 'Inefficient' genotypes had relatively" low yields and high nitrogen concentration. The majority of genotypes were neither markedly efficient or inefficient. The efficient genotypes at low nitrogen maintained their yield advantage at higher nitrogen levels with average nitrogen concentration and high numbers of tillers. Inefficient genotypes remained relatively stable in yield, numbers of tillers and nitrogen concentration.Partial correlation indicated an underlying high degree of dependence between yield, nitrogen and soluble-carbohydrate concentration at all nitrogen levels.
