The effects of probiotic Saccharomyces boulardii on the mental health, quality of life, fatigue, pain, and indices of inflammation and oxidative stress in patients with multiple sclerosis: study protocol for a double-blind randomized controlled clinical trial

Abstract: Background The relationship between gut dysbiosis and inflammatory diseases including multiple sclerosis (MS) is presently recognized as an important health issue. It has been established that some bacterial probiotic strains are effective in treating MS. This study will investigate the effect of yeast probiotic Saccharomyces boulardii (SB) supplements on mental health, quality of life, fatigue, pain, and indices of inflammation and oxidative stress in MS patients. … Show more

“…Further human trials are ongoing in which the effect of omega-3 FA intake in patients with cancer [137] and probiotics in patients with MS [138] on fatigue, albeit not as primary endpoint, is studied. Future trials should also expand to other probable anti-inflammatory dietary interventions.…”

“…Due to the absence of clinical trials performed with S. boulardii CNCM I-745 strain in this context, this chapter refers to another S. boulardii strain. MS is a neurodegenerative immune-mediated inflammatory disorder, which affects at least 2.3 million people globally [ 72 ]. The link between gut microbiota and MS is observed.…”

“…Recently, Aghamohammadi et al have published the study protocol for a double-blind randomized controlled clinical trial ( n = 50) regarding the use of S. boulardii (in a dose of 10 10 CFU daily for 4 months) in patients with multiple sclerosis (Iranian Clinical Trial Registry, IRCT20161022030424N1) [ 71 ]. They are going to assess changes in mental health by evaluating 28-item General Health Questionnaire (primary outcome), as well as secondary outcomes: quality of life, fatigue, pain, and serum levels of indices of inflammatory stress (high-sensitive C-reactive protein) and oxidative stress (malondialdehyde and total antioxidant capacity) [ 72 ].…”

“…Some of the best properties of probiotics, such as antipathogenicity [ 56 , 57 ], anti-diabetic [ 58 , 59 ], anti-obesity [ 60 , 61 ], anti-inflammatory [ 60 ], anti-cancer [ 62 ], anti-allergic [ 63 ], and angiogenic activities, as well as their effect on fatigue, the brain, and the central nervous system, have been described [ 64 ].…”
