Summary:Although the bivalve dredge used on the Algarve coast (southern Portugal) is highly selective for the target species, in some periods of the year the bycatch can exceed the catch of the commercial species. The present study aimed to quantify the bycatch and discards, estimate damage and mortality, and propose management measures to minimize discards and mortality. A total of 15 fishing surveys (60 tows) were performed using two types of dredges ("DDredge" targeting Donax trunculus and "SDredge" targeting Spisula solida and Chamelea gallina). Of the 85257 individuals (392.4 kg) of 52 taxa that were caught, 73.4% belonged to the target species, 22.1% to commercially undersized target species and 4.5% to bycatch species. Bycatch rates were lower for SDredge (13.5% in number and 6.3% in weight) than for DDredge (46.0% in number and 32.9% in weight). Damage and mortality rates were also lower using SDredge (1.3% and 1.0% of the total catches, respectively) than using DDredge (4.0% and 2.8% of the total catches). Survival experiments revealed the diverse vulnerability of the taxa and confirmed the influence of the damage score on the mortality rate. The results gathered in the present study encourage the adoption of a bycatch reduction device to reduce both direct and indirect mortality.Keywords: bivalve dredging; bycatch; discards; damage score; survival rate; metallic grid dredge; fishing gear technical design; bycatch reduction device Tasa de supervivencia de capturas incidentales y descartes en una pesquería a pequeña escala de bivalvos con rastro remolcado en la costa del Algarve (sur de Portugal) Resumen: Aunque la draga de bivalvos utilizada en la costa del Algarve (sur de Portugal) es altamente selectiva para las especies objetivo, en algunos períodos del año la captura incidental puede exceder la captura de las especies comerciales. En este contexto, el presente estudio tuvo como objetivo cuantificar las capturas incidentales y los descartes, estimar el daño y la mortalidad, y proponer medidas de gestión para minimizar los descartes y la mortalidad. Se realizaron un total de 15 embarques (60 arrastres) utilizando dos tipos de dragas ("DDredge" dirigida a Donax trunculus y "SDredge" dirigida a Spisula solida y Chamelea gallina). En total, se capturaron 85257 individuos (392.4 kg) pertenecientes a 52 taxones, distribuidos entre especies objetivo (73.4%), especies objetivo por debajo de la talla legal (22.1%) y especies de captura incidental (4.5%). Las tasas de captura incidental fueron menores en SDredge (13.5% número y 6.3% peso) que en DDredge (46.0% número y 32.9% peso). RESUMODispositivos para a redução da captura da fauna acompanhante (BRD) são modificações tecnológicas instaladas em redes de arrasto a fim de evitar ou reduzir a mortalidade indesejada oriunda da pesca. Foram examinadas as perspectivas para o uso de BRD na pesca artesanal de arrasto na costa sul brasileira a partir de uma revisão em três níveis. A primeira tratou de uma breve descrição da gestão pesqueira no Brasil (GP). A seguir, foram revisados conceitos a partir do enfoque ecossistêmico aplicado à pesca (EAF) e da cogestão adaptativa (ACM). Por fim, os resultados dos experimentos com o uso de BRDs na pesca artesanal do litoral do Paraná foram sintetizados e analisados com base em três critérios provenientes do EAF e ACM (potencial para processos participativos, diálogo de saberes e gestão adaptativa). Foram identificados quatro ciclos institucionais que demonstram condições limitadas para a adoção de novas abordagens da gestão, especialmente a adoção de BRD além de uma modificação técnica. Contudo, partindo de uma perspectiva ampliada de gestão, torna-se importante testar os BRDs em diferentes contextos, a partir da compreensão avançada da dinâmica dos sistemas pesqueiros artesanais, da participação efetiva dos pescadores, do uso de abordagens participativas de pesquisa e de gestão, do envolvimento gradativo dos gestores nos experimentos e de uma comunicação contínua sobre resultados dos experimentos para os diferentes espaços de gestão pesqueira. We examined the perspectives of use of BRD on the Southern Brazilian artisanal trawl fishery at three levels. Firstly, we briefly described Brazilian Fisheries Management (BFM) from the past 50 years. Secondly, we reviewed concepts in Ecosystem Approach to Fisheries (EAF) and Adaptive Co-Management (ACM) approach. Finally, we summarized some of the findings from experiments with the use of BRD on a small-scale fishing boat at the coast of Paraná based on three criteria from EAF and ACM (potential for participatory approach, knowledge bridging and adaptive management). We identified four institutional cycles, which showed limited conditions to the adoption of new fisheries management approaches, especially in terms of the adoption of BRD beyond a technical modification. However, from a wider fisheries management perspective, it's important to experience BRDs in different scenarios, through comprehension of dynamic of fisheries systems, participation of fishers, use of participatory approaches on research an management, engagement of decision makers, and the continued communication between experiments and fisheries management arenas.

Received 31 August 2015; accepted 21 March 2016In response to concerns over wastage and negative impacts on stocks, the damage (antennae loss) and collateral mortality of artisanally trawledand-discarded juvenile seabob shrimp (Xiphopenaeus kroyeri) and the key factors explaining variability were assessed in the South Brazil Bight. During 20 deployments across 7 d of fishing, 1562 X. kroyeri (14.5 + 3.1 mm carapace length, CL) were discarded into replicate on-board tanks at both the start and end of sorting, with some individuals monitored immediately for antennae loss and mortalities, and the rest assessed after 3 h. Virtually, all X. kroyeri discarded towards the end of sorting (mean + SD air exposure of 15.9 + 3.9 min) died. By comparison, those discarded at the start (2.7 + 2.8 min) had variable temporal mortalities (total of 52.3% immediately vs. 66.2% after 3 h) which, like antennae loss (total mean + SE of 50.4 + 34.2%) were positively associated with haul duration/catch weight and deck exposure, and more frequent among individuals with soft than hard exoskeletons. Antennae loss was also negatively correlated with CL. The results support (i) improving trawl selectivity to reduce the catches of small, unwanted X. kroyeri and other bycatch (and therefore total weights of catches) and/or (ii) sorting catches in water (to minimize air exposure). Such modifications might be promoted through awareness of the potential harvest benefits to fishers associated with reducing unaccounted fishing mortality of the targeted species.
