“…The most likely explanation is that the extent and thickness of the maize husk covering adversely affected the establishment of first instar larvae on the cob. Characteristics of husk cover of maize have been reported to have a substantial effect on infestation levels of the maize weevil Sitophilus zeamais (Motschulsky) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) (Kossou et al, 1993) and the larger grain borer Prostephanus truncatus (Horn) (Coleoptera: Bostrichidae) (Meikle et al, 1998). Moyal & Tran (1991a) observed 90% mortality of the first two instars of M. nigrivenella in maize in the field.…”

“…The farmers in Malawi believe that local varieties have higher resistance to storage pests than that of hybrid varieties (Smale, 1995;Chinsinga, 2011;Lunduka et al, 2012). Differences in poundability and flour-to-grain ratio between the local and hybrid varieties implies existence of varietal differences in grain hardness (Blandino et al, 2010;Lunduka et al, 2012), which has long been suspected to play a role in resistance against the storage pests among others (Meikle et al, 1998). Limited information of the local varieties is, however, available on the nutritional quality, and the processing properties of its flour as well as storability of the grains against storage pest.…”

“…Thirty‐two time series of data were compiled from previous published studies carried out in southern Benin and conducted in the storage seasons 1994–95 (Meikle et al . 1998a) and 1995–96 (Meikle et al .…”
