The effects of listening to music or viewing television on human gait

Abstract: This paper presents a two-part study with walking conditions involving music and television (TV) to investigate their effects on human gait. In the first part, we observed seventeen able-bodied adults as they participated in three 15-minute walking trials: 1. without music, 2. with music and 3. without music again. In the second part, we observed fifteen able-bodied adults as they walked on a treadmill for fifteen minutes while watching 1. TV with sound 2. TV without sound and 3. TV with subtitles but no sound… Show more

“…As such, while the trunk is suggested to be representative of the stability of the human system 46,155 , previous studies examining the MLE employed diverse placements and quantities of markers or accelerometers. For instance, the sternum 60 , the first 156 and sixth 43,157 thoracic vertebrae, the second 158 and fifth 159,147 lumbar vertebrae have been used, while clusters of two 160 or six markers 146,150,161 have also been employed for acquiring of data and subsequent analysis of dynamic stability. However, through time series analysis we compute a few characteristic numbers from a large sample of data 12,22 , and data collected from different parts of the system can contain different information regarding its states.…”

“…In particular, previous publications have utilized various measurements systems for gait assessment such as camera systems (e.g., [12, 13]), body-mounted accelerometers (e.g., [14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21, 22]), force platforms (e.g., [1], [13, 23]) and gyroscopes (e.g., [24, 25, 26]). Force platforms and cameras have the advantage of providing a fixed frame of reference whereas body-mounted systems enable subjects to cover longer distances [14].…”

“…Similarly, digital TV is also regarded as having larger potential than other devices, because it is already a well-settled medium in society (Gunter et al, 2003). Sejdic et al (2013) studied that watching TV has a significant impact on people daily life. Kozuchova and Baskova (2014) explored the TV watching habits on weekdays and weekends of students in Central Slovakia and found that they spend free time on viewing TV for more than 2 hours.…”

“…Even many people have a regular habit to scan their cell phone during the night when they are awake. It is also in the fashion that young people prefer listening to music on a smartphone while walking, driving, studying, playing, eating, exercising, and even sleeping (Sejdic et al, 2013). It may be more dangerous for their health and social life.…”
