The effects of incorporation of silver-zeolite on selected properties of mineral trioxide aggregate

Abstract: The purpose of this study was to evaluate some physical and chemical properties of MTA incorporated with antibacterial silver zeolite (SZ). 0%, 0.2% or 2% mass fraction of SZ was added to MTA powder. The amounts of calcium released from the specimen in deionized water were measured with an atomic absorption spectrophotometer. The setting times of the samples were evaluated using Gilmore-type needles. For solubility and water absorption tests, the samples were placed in a cylindrical polystyrene-sealed containe… Show more

“…The powder-to-liquid ratio was the same in all the samples. Moreover, Ze-Ag-Zn was used at 2 wt% because in previous studies this percentage positively affected some properties of MTA (10,11). Mixing the powder with liquid was carried out manually by one person for all the samples for 15 seconds.…”

“…It is a crystalline structure of alumino-silicate with a porous molecular structure in which various ions such as zinc and silver is embedded in the pores (10,11). A review of the literature in relation to the use of zeolite in combination with various elements such as silver and zinc in the dental field indicates its positive antimicrobials effect (12,13).…”

“…Their results with a 4–5% Zeomic ® loading showed a significantly greater effect on the pH value decrease when compared with the unloaded samples, suggesting that these materials can have some applications in denture stomatitis. Several studies [ 34 , 35 , 36 ] also show that zeolite loaded with Ag + cations is a good additive to Mineral Trioxide Aggregate (MTA) since it is able to confer it with an antimicrobial effect, finding a correlation between the amount of Ag+ cations released and the bacteria/fungi growth inhibition. MTA is a cement widely used in endodontics [ 37 ], since it is biocompatible, insoluble in tissue fluids, and able to seal the pathways between the root canal system and its surrounding tissues.…”

“…Recent studies have shown that the association of MTA with SZ increases its antibacterial properties. [7][8][9][10][11] However, for success of endodontic procedure, it is equally important to investigate whether addition of SZ affects marginal adaptation of the cement with dentin. There are several methods for evaluating the adhesion of dental material to dentin.…”
