The Effects of habitat fragmentation on the distribution of primates in the kimbi-fungom National Park, North West Region, Cameroon

Abstract: Anthropogenic disturbance is known to affect the diversity and abundance of primates in the world. Many studies on primates in Cameroon have focused on forest ecosystems, with little knowledge on primate species in the degraded woodland and grasslands which inhabit a great number of primates. This study investigates the relationship between primate distribution and habitat parameters in the heavily human occupied landscape of Kimbi Fungom National Park (KFNP). Primate data were obtained through the use of line… Show more

“…Changes in land cover through deforestation pose serious threats to ecosystem sustainability especially when natural vegetation is altered for human uses such as agriculture, settlement and timber exploitation (Melle et al 2019). Tropical forest loss and fragmentation have been proposed as the main cause of population decline and species extinction of flora and fauna in the tropics (Laurance et al 2002).…”

“…Tropical forest loss and fragmentation have been proposed as the main cause of population decline and species extinction of flora and fauna in the tropics (Laurance et al 2002). According to Melle et al (2019), fragmented habitats negatively affect the movement of species between empty patches for recolonization resulting in a high rate of population decline and faunal extinction (Laurance et al 2002).…”

The scales only cover their dorsal side and tail, but their ventral sides are soft covered with few hairs and their head and limbs are hardened structure Maurice, et al, (2019).…”
