The effects of extended workdays on fatigue, health, performance and satisfaction in nursing

Abstract: The 9-hour shift seemed to combine the negative aspects of the 12-hour shift with the negative aspects of the 8-hour shift. It is suggested that the 9-hour shift had more negative effects than the 12-hour shift because: (1) nurses could not choose what shift length they worked; (2) many worked part-time; and (3) they already had many days off. It is also suggested that increases in workload since the 1980s make current extended shifts in nursing more fatiguing.

“…[5][6][7][8][9] Sleep deprivation, sleep disturbance, and fatigue also are significant contributing factors to impaired personal health. [10][11][12] Restorative napping, defined as a purposeful, brief sleep period, has been identified as a potential strategy to improve performance, reduce fatigue, and increase vigilance for individuals working extended hours or during night shift. [13][14][15][16][17] In order for restorative napping to occur, it has been suggested that managers of health care facilities provide a safe and comfortable resting place for nurses working night shift, ensure that nurses do not miss breaks, and use strategies to combat shift work issues such as fatigue.…”

“…15 In contrast, limitations in mannequin fidelity are real, as illustrated in Table 1, and can serve to improvement of rote task completion with a concurrent diminishment in the accuracy of tasks involving critical thought, an observation that could also explain other studies that have had contradictory results in this area. 20 Another possibility is that 12 hours is too short a duration to see significant changes in error rate. This is consistent with an earlier study in which statistically significant alterations in error rate were not seen until shifts reached 12.5 hours or longer.…”

“…Therefore, their physical and mental health may affect their working concentration, which may influence ship navigation safety (Hsu, 2012). Previous research illustrated there were potentially disastrous outcomes from fatigue in terms of poor health (Josten, et al, 2003;Hetherington, 2006). Shift patterns contribute to fatigue and in turn cause poorer health and safety performance (IskraGolec, et al, 1996).…”

“…Generally, all of the staff have to work night shifts, which may lead to mental fatigue and decrease their working concentration. Relevant studies indicated human fatigue is one of the main causes of marine casualties (Josten et al, 2003;Hetherington, 2006). This paper suggests the port authority may make regulations to control the shift system of operating staff, such as the maximum work hours for a shift.…”
