The effects of clearance sizes on labyrinth brush seal leakage performance using a Reynolds-averaged Navier—Stokes solver and non-Darcian porous medium model

Abstract: Effects of clearance sizes on the pressure and leakage characteristics in a shaft labyrinth brush seal were numerically investigated using Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) and non-Darcian porous medium model solutions. The leakage flow characteristics in the referenced design shaft labyrinth seal of turbomachinery was initially studied using the RANS solution. The initial shaft labyrinth seal was redesigned into the multi-stage labyrinth brush seal. The reliability and accuracy of the RANS and the non-Da… Show more

“…In this paper, the calibrated permeability coefficients are adopted to analyze the effects of geometry in the flow fields of the brush seal. The flow model is investigated by adopting the Reynoldsaveraged Navier-Stokes solutions (RANS) coupled with a non-Darcian porous medium approach with a defined resistance flow [24,25]. Figure 4 shows the computational model of the brush seal.…”

“…Once passed the choking zone, flow is exposed to throttling between cloth weave and downstream slot surface, and subject to resistance through voids inside the cloth weave placed near downstream. Several studies investigate the impact of geometric dimensions and boundary conditions on rim, brush and laby-brush seal leakage performance [19][20][21][22]. A comprehensive study is needed to understand how cloth seal leakage performance is affected by geometric dimensions under varying pressure load.…”
