The Effects of Balance of Low Vision Patients on Activities of Daily Living

Abstract: [Purpose] This research investigated the relationship between balance measured by a TETRAX and activities of daily living (ADL) assessed by NEI-VFQ 25. The results should provide basic data for rehabilitation therapy for low-vision patients. [Methods] We used the NEI-VFQ-25 vision-related Activities of Daily Living evaluation, MMSE-K, and TETRAX to evaluate 30 low-vision outpatients at K hospital in Daejeon, South Korea from July 5 to July 23, 2012. We performed linear regression analysis using a statistical s… Show more

“…Vision is important for the development of postural reflexes 3 ) . A blind child develops abnormal postural reflexes and faulty motor patterns, leading to incorrect distribution of muscular force throughout the body 1 ) which precipitates postural and balance deficits 12 , 13 ) . For blind subjects, half of the normal sensory intake of the brain is lost 14 ) , disrupting the normal mechanism of neurological integration and disintegration, and preventing the formation of good postural habits 7 , 15 ) .…”

“…To assess body balance, we used the TETRAX biofeedback system (Tetrax Portable Multiple System, Tetrax Ltd., Ranmat Gan, Israel). This system measures the postural sway on 4 force plates, one each for the toes and heels of each foot, and it is mainly used to evaluate the general stability (ST) of body balance and the fall risk index (FI) 14 ) . Increased values of these indices indicate that general instability and the chance of falling are proportionally elevated.…”

“…It was stated that the risk of falling in elderly people was higher since they were not able to detect the environmental threats because of VF defects [11]. For those people having impaired vision, many vision-dependent activities and daily tasks are difficult or impossible to perform, reducing their ability to perform daily living activities and maintain independence, which has a negative impact on their quality of life [12].…”
