The effects of aggressive environments on the mechanical properties of basalt plastics

Abstract: A review and analysis of changes in mechanical properties of basalt fibers (BF) and basalt composite materials under effects of aggressive environments in reference to foreign and Russian scientific literature has been carried out. The changes in the physical and mechanical properties of the fiberglass (FG) and basalt plastic (BP) have been compared. The analysis shows that BF is a good alternative to fiberglass for elaboration of composite materials for various purposes. In the most aggressive alkaline enviro… Show more

“…However, the good thermal and corrosion stability properties of basalt, along with the lower manufacturing costs, make BFRP an interesting candidate for certain applications. These include reinforcing material in construction, high temperature-insulation of engine parts, fire protection, and containment in corrosive environments such as chemical processes [14,15]. Recommendations, which BFRP composites are suited for specific applications may be found in Reference [9].…”

“…The chemical composition of basalt is dominated by SiO 2 with 42-56% (by weight), followed by Al 2 O 3 (14-18%), Fe 2 O 3 (11-12%), CaO (7-9%) and further oxides, depending on geological origin, see Figure 1 [13]. In comparison to GFRP or CFRP, the number of publications providing data of mechanical properties of BFRP is small, see References [14,15] for a review. A similar material with a different experimental program was investigated by Davis et al [16].…”

“…According to initial composition of used fiber glass [36], only 18 wt% of the fiber is CaO which was finely fragmented into amorphous phase that has no identified peaks. But due to the higher SiO 2 amount exists, the Ca fragments had higher chance to combine with SiO 2 to form CaSiO 2 appeared the XRD pattern in The bivalent cations Ca 2+ , Mg 2+ , Fe 2+ diffuse from the inner volume to the surface, where they react with oxygen from the external medium, forming nano-crystalline layers of CaO, MgO, (Mg, Fe) 3 O 4 [37].…”

“…Many of these investigations have focused on the behavior of concrete beams that are reinforced with a single type of fiber reinforcement, comparing their performance against that of conventional steel-reinforced concrete beams [16][17][18][19][20][21][22]. Conversely, other studies [23][24][25][26][27][28][29] have chosen to examine FRP bars in isolation, subjecting them to various conditions to elucidate their intrinsic properties without integration into concrete structures. While these studies offer valuable insights into the material properties of FRPs, there remains a notable gap in understanding how these materials function within the broader context of concrete elements.…”
