The Effectiveness of Incinerator at the Integrated Waste Treatment Plant in the Campus of Engineering Faculty - Hasanuddin University

Eco enzyme is a form of creative and environmentally friendly organic waste management efforts. This study aims to analyze and compare the characteristics of eco enzymes made from organic waste with variations of palm sugar and coconut sugar. The method used in this study is a quantitative method with an experimental approach and qualitative methods in the form of research development research. This study consists of two types of samples, namely palm sugar and coconut sugar with three times the repetition of each type of sample and fermented for 3 months. The results showed that eco enzyme made from organic waste with a variation of coconut sugar produced a higher content of acetic acid, phosphorus, calcium, lipase enzyme activity and protease enzyme activity and the final volume of the solution, while eco enzyme made from organic waste with palm sugar variations resulting in amylase enzyme activity, higher pH and chlorine. Based on the results, the characteristics obtained from coconut sugar, eco enzyme solution is recommended for use in agriculture as an organic fertilizer, while eco enzyme from coconut sugar is recommended as a disinfectant and natural detergent.

The Patommo-Sidrap Landfill Lifespan Estimation

Sidenreng Rappang (Sidrap) Regency has a landfill called the Patommo landfill, which has implemented a sanitary landfill model. Patommo landfill is located in Patommo Hamlet, Arawa Village, Watang Pulu District, Sidrap Regency, approximately ± 3 Km from Lawawoi, the capital of Watang Pulu District, and ± 10 Km from Pangkajene, the capital of this regency. This landfill has adequate facilities and infrastructure as a sanitary landfill. The waste transported to the landfill is managed in five stages: weighing, demolition, distribution, solidification, and covering the waste with soil. This study focuses on the lifespan of the Patommo landfill in the Sidrap district. The lifespan is obtained by calculating the amount of total waste per year, waste density, waste volume, and the prediction of the amount of waste in the future based on population growth. This research takes reference data from 2016, which will be compared with current conditions. The results of analyzing data obtained the average value of the waste density of Sidrap District is 1379.51 kg/m3. Therefore, the volume of waste entering the Patommo landfill is 47,395.95 m3. The total volume of landfill capacity is 1,708,737.64 m3, with a volume for soil cover of 624,300.64 m3, and the waste volume is 1,084,447 m3. Estimating the lifespan of the Patommo landfill without reduction efforts is 17 years or will be full in 2033, while the estimation of lifespan with reduction efforts is 32 years or will be full in 2048.

The weight of domestic solid waste generation at the Faculty of Engineering of Hasanuddin University is 62.60 kg day−1. The percentage of organic waste generation is 28%, so the weight of organic waste generation on this campus is 17.66 kg. One way to utilize organic waste is by composting. There are three methods for composting, including (1) aerobic methods, (2) anaerobic methods, and (3) combining aerobic and anaerobic methods. The method used in measuring waste generation is the measurement of waste generation in ten buildings located on this campus for eight consecutive days, according to the procedures in the Indonesian National Standard. The data used in this study include primary and secondary data. Primary data in this study are the results of measurements of weight, volume, and composition of waste. Whereas, secondary data in this study is the number of the campus population of the Faculty of Engineering. From the primary and secondary data, composter space requirements, effectiveness, and investment evaluation through the Benefit-Cost Ratio of the three composting methods can be calculated. From the calculation results, the space requirements for aerobic composter are 16.08 m2, 16.08 m2 for the anaerobic composter, and 25.61 m2 for combination aerobic and anaerobic composter. The effectiveness values for each composter method were 98.7%, 98.47%, and 98.9% for aerobic, anaerobic composters, and the combination of the two, respectively. Furthermore, the value of the Benefit-Cost Ratio for each composter method is 1.20, 1.38, and 1.85 for aerobic, anaerobic composters, and the combination of the two, respectively.
