The Effectiveness of Deep Oscillation Therapy on Reducing Swelling and Pain in Athletes With Acute Lateral Ankle Sprains

Abstract: Clinical Scenario: Ankle sprains are the most prevalent athletic-related musculoskeletal injury treated by athletic trainers, often affecting activities of daily living and delaying return to play. Most of these cases present with pain and swelling in the ankle, resulting in decreased range of motion and strength deficits. Due to these impairments, proper treatment is necessary to avoid additional loss of play and prevent future injuries. Recently, there has been an increased use of deep oscillation therapy by… Show more

“…Moreover, its oscillatory action aids in the reabsorption of edema by enhancing fluid movement within tissues, thereby reducing swelling and promoting tissue healing. Overall, these findings underscore the therapeutic potential of Deep Oscillation ® in managing various musculoskeletal conditions and promoting tissue recovery [ 29 ].…”

“…The treatment technique includes use of a pair of maniples and electrodes which are applied to the patient's skin in areas corresponding to lymph node stations. [85][86][87] The field is applied using a slow, circular motion, without pressing, following lymphatic routes. It provokes cyclic movement in deep tissues, leading to mechanical pumping and redistribution of fluids.…”

“…88 Deep oscillation massage is used to stimulate absorption of edema, to reduce pain, and to alleviate wound healing, due to its anti-inflammatory and antifibrous effects. [85][86][87]89,90 Ohkuma 91 presented the first published data on the effect of electric fields in 10 lower limb lymphoedema patients. He reported decrease in leg volume and no adverse sequelae of treatment, except for one patient who developed transient skin erythema.…”
