Evidence for Rehabilitation Interventions After Acute Lateral Ankle Sprains in Athletes: A Scoping Review

Abstract: Context: Acute lateral ankle sprain (LAS) is a common injury in athletes and is often associated with decreased athletic performance and, if treated poorly, can result in chronic ankle issues, such as instability. Physical performance demands, such as cutting, hopping, and landing, involved with certain sport participation suggests that the rehabilitation needs of an athlete after LAS may differ from those of the general population. Objective: To review the literature to determine the most effective rehabilita… Show more

“…Ankle joint injury is an important medical care problem. Ankle sprains affect about 8% of the general population, and the recurrence rate is as high as 80% in patients engaging in high-risk sports [ 1 , 2 ]. A previous study [ 3 ] has reported that 40%-55% of patients still have residual symptoms of ankle joint six months after the occurrence of ankle sprain.…”

“…A majority of ankle sprains are lateral ankle sprains (LASs), which are caused by the disruption of the lateral ligament complex due to excessive plantar flexion and foot inversion (Garrick and Requa, 1988 ; Vuurberg et al, 2018 ). It occurred with high incidence among people, especially in individuals participating in sports and outdoor activities (Vuurberg et al, 2018 ; Michels et al, 2022 ; Tee et al, 2022 ). Unfortunately, a certain proportion of individuals who once developed LAS may suffer persistent ankle pain and recurrent sprains (Anandacoomarasamy and Barnsley, 2005 ; de Ruvo et al, 2022 ; Michels et al, 2022 ).…”
