The Effect of Yarding Technique on Yarding Productivity and Cost

Abstract: Cable yarding is a well establish technology for the extraction of timber in steep terrain. However, it is encumbered with relatively low productivity and high costs, and as such this technology needs to adapt and progress to remain viable. The development of biomass as a valuable byproduct, and the availability of processors to support yarder operations, lend themselves to increasing the level of whole-tree extraction. Double-hitch carriages have been developed to allow for full suspension of whole-tree and t… Show more

“…From Equation (7), to increase the clambunk skidder delay-free productivity, the load volume per phase V CS should be increased, whereas the skidding distance L CS in it should be decreased. The clambunk skidder productivity including delays is calculated by Equation (8) in Table 6, and the opportunities for increase are the same as for delay-free productivity.…”

“…Cable yarders are used mainly for timber harvest using parallel or fan-shaped schemes [7], and new double-hitch carriages have been applied for full suspension. This different method requires longer to load up but permits a similar performance [8].…”

“…At present, due to the decrease in the economic effect of the traditional logging process with the use of heavy forest machines [1], alternative technologies are being actively considered in the timber skidding phase [2] with special attention of CSI [3], as a universal and often uncontested means of developing logging sites that are difficult to access due to soil-ground [4] and relief [5,6] conditions. At the same time, in addition to the economic efficiency of CSI, special attention is paid to industrial safety and labor protection when hauling wood with such a system [7,8].…”
