The effect of washing on the thickness of the stratum corneum in normal and atopic individuals

Abstract: The thickness of, and number of cell layers in, the stratum corneum and the living epidermis were determined on frozen sections of washed and unwashed skin from normal and atopic individuals of both sexes. The stratum corneum of atopic patients was thinner and had fewer layers of dead cells and intercellular lipid than normal, although the living epidermis was thicker. Regular washing with soap and water had no appreciable effect on the dimensions of the living epidermis of either group but caused a reduction … Show more

“…It can first be seen that there is a reduction in the level of trypsin with the atopic dermatitis which can account for decreased desquamation [32,33]. In contrast, the other enzymes either maintain their normal levels (chymotrypsin, ß-glucocerebrosidase) or are increased (PLA 2 and phosphatase).…”

“…This can lead to peeling of corneocytes ('keratolysis'). Such an effect could be demonstrated by the assay of a thinning of the horny layer [23,24].…”

“…Studying both healthy volunteers and patients with atopic dermatitis, White et al [3] found reductions in stratum corneum cell layers and intercellular lipids in patients with atopic dermatitis. In both populations, washing with soap (no details given) twice daily for 7 days produced reductions in stratum corneum cell layers and intercellular lipids.…”

“…The prototypes of indirect keratolytic agents are retinoids, which interfere with the keratinization pro- Gloor/Haus/Keipert cess. Direct keratolytic activity has also been postulated for surfactants [2][3][4]. Microemulsions (MEs) with a relatively high surfactant content may therefore also have keratolytic activity.…”
