The Effect of Vasoactive Agents on Stress-Induced Gastric Hemorrhage in the Rat

Abstract: The effect of 6 vasodepressors and 4 vasopressors was studied on cold + restraint-induced gastric hemorrhage in the rat. Significant reduction in hemorrhage incidence was produced by all the vasodepressors except methacholine; only clonidine of the vasopressors was effective in reducing the incidence of stress hemorrhage. A synergistic effect was found between vasopressin, angiotensin and norepinephrine and the individual stresses of cold or restraint. All of the vasodepressors and vasopressors reduced at leas… Show more

“…The gastric juice contents of each animal were then centrifuged and the following parameters were assessed in the supernatants: The acid output: acid output was calculated according to the method by Brodie and Hooke . The acidity of the collected gastric juice was determined by titration to pH 7.0 with 0.01N NaOH.…”

“…Titratable acid output was calculated as µ-equivalents, by multiplying the volume in ml by the acid concentration in m-equivalent per liter (Brodie and Hooke, 1971). The results were then divided by four to give output per hour.…”

“…Titratable acidity was carried out according to the method of [25] and [26] by titrating gastric juice against sodium hydroxide (0.01N) using phenol red as an indicator. Acid output was calculated as the rate of the gastric juice production [27] as microequivalents per 4 hours.…”
