The effect of urban green roof design on beetle biodiversity

Abstract: The value of urban green spaces to biodiversity conservation depends on the design and management. The importance of habitat quality and complexity to species diversity has led to the suggestion that habitat design elements-varied substrate depth, greater plant diversity, logs or stones-would support invertebrate diversity on green roofs. To evaluate this possibility, we conducted pit-fall trap sampling on three green roofs of simple design (intended primarily for stormwater management), three habitat roofs, a… Show more

“…2e) between conventional and biodiverse roofs revealed no difference in their respective compositions. This was unexpected since previous articles found that the type of green roof affects spider communities [18], spider richness [16], ground beetle communities [23]; [20], or beetle richness [16,23]. Furthermore, spider richness has been found to increase as a result of a more diverse plant composition [51] and an increase in plant species richness was correlated to a higher spider diversity [6].…”

“…High-diversity plant species can attract varied species. Green roofs, compared to non-green roofs, can attract more birds, arthropods, and gastropods [130,[140][141][142][143][144][145][146][147]. (3) Green roofs can restore lost green spaces due to large-scale developments in dense urban areas.…”
