“…8 However, Health Canada issued a warning about domperidone doses exceeding 30 mg/day. 13 We used a minimum dose of 10 mg orally 3 times per day as no Indonesian studies have assessed the optimum dose of domperidone to increase breast milk production. Moreover, this dose was chosen to avoid possible side effects, especially arrhythmia.…”

“…In addition, the bioavailability of oral domperidone is only 13 to 17% and peak levels of domperidone at doses of 10 mg orally are only about 1/30 that of administration via the parenteral route. 13 Limitations of the study were that we did not measure serum prolactin or domperidone levels in breast milk, due to lack of measurement tools and facilities in Haji Adam Malik Hospital. We also did not assess the optimum dose and duration of domperidone administration to maintain breast milk production.…”

“…On the other hand, these findings contradict the results of (Ganong, 1995;Knoppert et al). They stated that in the terminal stage of mammary gland development, lobulo alveolar growth is regulated by prolactin.…”

“…Numerous functions have been recognized for prolactin, including stable secretory activity of the mammary glands, accompaniment of its activity with androgens and effect on the metabolism of androgens (Akinloye & Oke, 2013). Various studies have been carried out on chemical drugs as breast milk producing medications, but these drugs have not been used much due to their side effects (Knoppert et al, 2013;Paten et al, 2013). It seems that using medicinal plants is one of the methods of increasing breast milk.…”

“…Because of maternal safety concerns (reports of arrhythmias from intravenous use in patients receiving chemotherapy), domperidone is not routinely prescribed in the United States, although data indicate that it may be highly effective for increasing milk volume. 32,[39][40][41] There have been multiple randomized, placebo-controlled blinded studies that found essentially no differences in milk volumes produced between women given metoclopramide and a placebo. [42][43][44][45][46] Metoclopramide may cause serious maternal side-effects, including depression with long-term use and extrapyramidal symptoms.…”
