The effect of trivalent metal nitrates on the properties of dental cements made from poly(acrylic acid)

Abstract: Addition of either Al(NO 3 ) 3 or Fe(NO 3 ) 3 to zinc polycarboxylate and glass polyalkenoate dental cements has been shown to cause an acceleration to their setting reactions. In the case of Fe(NO 3 ) 3 , the reaction was so fast that cements could not be mixed, but Al(NO 3 ) 3 had a less severe effect, and cements containing various amounts of this additive were prepared. Their compressive strength at 24 h was lower than for the original cements, with zinc polycarboxylate being more affected than the glass p… Show more

“…To better understand the mechanism of interaction between the Cu 2+ ions and the MAA units, FTIR analysis was performed (Figure ). The addition of Cu(OAc) 2 to the copolymer dissolved in methanol led to a new peak at 1620 cm −1 that grows with increasing copper acetate concentration, corresponding to bridging bidentate complexation of the MAA groups with Cu 2+ ions . No peaks associated with ionic (1575 cm −1 ) or chelating bidentate interactions (1560 cm −1 ) were observed.…”

“…This increases the concentration of hydrogen ions, hence decreasing pH. For example, 1 mol dm −3 aluminium nitrate solution reduced the pH of poly(acrylic acid) solution from 1.5 to 0.2 [44].…”

“…For Fe(NO 3 ) 3 the converse is the case 15. In association with poly(acrylic acid) it shows a band at 1526 cm −1 , corresponding to chelate bidentate geometry, and a band at 1632 cm −1 , assigned tentatively to unidentate coordination, but possibly arising instead from either atmospheric location or retained water.…”

“…It was slower, taking 2–3 min for the entire solution to be converted from a relatively mobile liquid to a soft gel. Poly(acrylic acid), on the other hand, underwent a much more rapid reaction and formed two phases,15 with the precipitated phase a fairly stiff gel. Poly(acrylic acid) with FeCl 3 is known for similar behavior 22…”
