The effect of total replacement of fish oil with DHA-Gold®and plant oils on growth and fillet quality of rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) fed a plant-based diet

Abstract: This study investigated the effect of the replacement of fish oil (FO) with DHA-Gold (DHA-G)-supplemented plant oils (PO) in rainbow trout fed plant-protein-based diets. Five diets (450 mg g À1 digestible protein and 150 mg g À1 crude lipid) were fed to rainbow trout (initial weight 37 AE 0.5 g) for 12 weeks in a 15°C recirculating water system. The lipid inclusion types and levels were FO, PO and PO with DHA-G supplemented at 30 mg g À1 , 60 mg g À1 or 90 mg g À1 of the diet replacement for corn oil. Fish fed… Show more

“…Earlier studies have already evaluated the effects of dietary vegetable oil source on growth performance, fatty acid profiles and some haematological and biochemical variables of rainbow trout (Betiku, Barrows, Ross, & Sealey, ; Bullerwell et al., ). But the current work is the first study addressing the effect of dietary peanut oil on growth performance, fatty acid profile, haematological and serum biochemical variables as a lipid source in the diets of rainbow trout.…”

“…Although the overall content of n-3 LC-PUFA in these oils is comparable to or higher than the content in FO, they typically contain more DHA and less EPA than traditional FO. Novel oil products are the focus of considerable promising research (Vizcaino-Ochoa et al 2010;Codabaccus et al 2012;Trushenski et al 2012;Betiku et al 2016;Emery et al 2016). These oils present a series of exciting opportunities for the sustainable expansion of the aquaculture sector but also highlight a partial knowledge gap: the dearth of research addressing individual fatty acid requirements.…”

“…When dietary fish oil is replaced by plant oils, the resulting FA composition in fish often changes to a profile rather poor in n-3 FA, thus making them less valuable for human nutrition [ 12 , 13 , 14 , 15 , 16 , 17 ]. Considerable effort has been made in the past decade to counteract this trend where various approaches have been considered including the use of n-3 FA rich finishing diets after feeding plant based diets [ 14 , 18 ], the inclusion of microalgae rich in n-3 FA [ 19 , 20 , 21 ], the use of n-3 enriched oil from genetically modified oilseeds [ 22 ], and the application of secondary plant compounds to alter endogenous n-3 FA synthesis [ 23 , 24 ], amongst others.…”
