The effect of the cell-derived extracellular matrix membrane on wound adhesions in rabbit strabismus surgery

Abstract: The cell-derived extracellular matrix (ECM) membrane is a bio-absorbable membrane composed of aseptic ECM obtained from swine knee chondrocyte. The purpose of our study was to evaluate the inhibitory effect of the cell-derived ECM membrane in postoperative adhesion following strabismus surgery on rabbit eyes. Twenty four adult male New Zealand albino rabbits were used. Each rabbit has undergone 3 mm resection of the superior rectus muscle in both eyes. The cell-derived ECM membrane was applied between the conj… Show more

“…Currently, polysaccharide-based film or gel-type anti-adhesive barriers, such as sodium hyaluronate, gelatin, and carboxymethyl cellulose, have been extensively investigated and are commercially available for clinical utilization [ 3 , 4 , 5 , 6 , 7 , 8 , 9 , 10 ]. In addition, several extracellular matrices, such as collagen, have been investigated in preclinical animal studies as anti-adhesive barriers [ 11 , 12 , 13 ].…”

“…Chondrocytes are easily dedifferentiated in in vitro cultures, and it is difficult to obtain enough population of cells required. To address this limitation well-designed culture systems or 3D scaffolds for chondrocytes should be established [7][8][9][10].…”
