The Effect of Surface Topography Feature Size Density and Distribution on the Results of a Data Processing and Parameters Calculation with a Comparison of Regular Methods

Abstract: In this paper, the influence of occurrence of surface texture features on the values of surface topography parameters calculated after the application of various data processing techniques was presented. Different types of surface topographies were considered, as follows: cylinder liners, some with additionally burnished dimples, turned, ground, milled, laser-textured, composite, ceramic, or isotropic in general. The effects of feature size on the areal form removal, noise suppressions, or end-effect reducing … Show more

“…Extensive research proved that the “visibility” of HFN by means of the PSD analysis depends on the size of the surface topography features [ 109 ], e.g., the valley diameter and the depth of the plateau-honed cylinder liners with additionally burnished oil pockets [ 110 ]. The density (number) of treatment marks also affects noise recognition and visual analysis.…”

“…All the studied surfaces were provided, as a preliminary analysis, with an areal form removal process. This digital action, was presented in detail in a previous paper, published by the author; therefore, it was not studied in the current research as many detailed analyses were provided in previously [31] with the application of various degrees of polynomials. During data processing, the received (studied) details were generally flat; they did not contain a form (shape and waviness).…”

“…Due to the processing error of the mechanical device [30][31][32] and measurement error of the measuring equipment, we used 1 • as the unit of the data to ensure that the error did not affect the experimental results. The motor drove the light pen to the measurement position, took a stable image, calculated the measurement accuracy, and rotated 1 degree to take the image.…”
