The Effect of Spontaneous and Induced Abortion on Prematurity and Birthweight

Abstract: AND SummaryThe effect of previous induced or spontaneous abortions on prematurity (defined as a gestational age of less than 37 weeks) and birthweight was studied in 4847 babies born consecutively at Alexandra Maternity Hospital, Athens, Greece. “…Pantelakis et al (11) reported a doubling of rates of stillbirths and premature labor among Greek women with previous abortions. In another study from Athens, Papaevangelou et al (12) found about a twofold increase in premature delivery in women with a history of either induced or spontaneous abortions. Czeizel et ai (7) speculated that the declining birth weight in Hungary may be in part related to the increasing use of abortion.…”

“…Liberal abortion laws in Japan and Sweden are associated with decreased rates of low birth weight infants (4-5%) [17]. A long-term effect of increased numbers of low birth weight babies was noted following legal abörtjon in Hungary [11], and illegal abortion in Greece [14,15]. Recent studies from Yugoslavia [9], Japan [18] and Taiwan [3] found no association betweeninducedabortionandsubsequentpregnancy outcome.…”
