The Effect of Splicing Shape and Interval Length on the Failure Mode of Laminated Composites under Tensile Condition

Abstract: This paper presents an experimental investigation on the failure modes of glass fiber reinforced 2D woven fabric with ladder splicing laminate composites. On the basis of [0/0/+45/90/-45/90]s ply sequence, six kinds of laminated performs with different splicing interval lengths which were 4mm, 8mm, 12mm respectively and two different splicing shape which were ladder splicing and double vertical line splicing, and a kind of laminated perform with continuous laminates of 2D glass fiber woven fabric were made. “…Figure 5 a shows the universal testing machine used to test the bending strength. Referring to GB/T 1449-2005 “Experimental method for bending properties of fibre-reinforced plastics” [ 30 , 31 ], ten 2.5-cm-wide and 6-cm-long samples of the composite were cut along the warp and weft direction of the composite, and the bending strength of the composite was tested using a universal testing machine (MTS Industrial Systems Co., Ltd. model Landmark 370.25) (American). The average bending strength was calculated from the data.…”

“…Both of them determine the mechanical properties of the composite component. The sample geometries were created according to the tensile test standard GB/T 1447-2005 and the flexural test standard GB/T 1449-2005 (Chen et al, 2021a(Chen et al, , 2021b(Chen et al, , 2021cZhang et al, 2011). And the number of tested samples in each group is not less than 5.…”

“…In the past decade, some kinds of splicing fiber reinforced laminated composites have been studied. Zhang et al [15] investigated the failure modes of glass fiber reinforced 2D woven fabric with stair-like splicing laminate composites and found that the failure modes were from rapid damage to accumulating failure when the interval length increased from 4 to 12 mm and all fractures occur at the site of the splicing line due to the stress concentration. Chen et al [16] studied the tensile failure characteristics and the stress distributions of unidirectional carbon fiber-reinforced laminate polymers (CFRP) with different splicing structures.…”
