The Effect of Spill Light on Street Lighting Energy Efficiency and Light Pollution

Abstract: Street lighting is usually designed to meet luminance (or illuminance) requirements of technical standards and recommendations with minimum possible lighting installation power consumption. However, with the expansion of street lighting in growing cities caused by increasing traffic intensity, the disturbing effects of street lighting on the surroundings are often neglected in the design of lighting systems. Light emitted outside the area to be lit (spill light) causes an increase in complaints from residents … Show more

“…Strategy One: Develop intervention strategies from electricity access to reduce light pollution risk levels. Implementation case: the night lighting equipment such as street lamps could be changed from a timing switch to a photosensitive switch, to avoid opening at bright times due to climate, season, and other reasons; limit the use of some decorative lights; encourage the public to form the habit of turning off lights; reduce the ratio of spill lights [14].…”

“…The use of artificial road lighting also has unequivocally negative effects related to ecology and the phenomenon of light pollution [37][38][39][40]. The lighting of a certain level or spectrum, can provoke wildlife to cross the road during the night period, which negatively affects the safety of both wildlife and road safety [41][42][43][44].…”
