The effect of secoverine hydrochloride on stimulated sigmoid motility: a double‐blind, placebo controlled cross‐over study in irritable bowel syndrome.

Abstract: The effect of oral secoverine hydrochloride on neostigmine‐stimulated sigmoid motility in 12 patients with irritable bowel syndrome was studied in a double‐blind placebo‐controlled cross‐over study. Both spontaneous and stimulated motor activity were significantly reduced by the compound in comparison with placebo. The most sensitive indices were the frequency of wave activity, maximum amplitude and motility index. Two patients reported mild dizziness after secoverine.

“…The anticholiner gics, clidinium. secoverine and cimetropium, acutely inhibit postprandial colonic motility [63][64][65], Oral hyoscine improved symptoms, but required combination with fiber and a tranquilizer to exceed the response to placebo [59], However, the anticholinergic, profinium, significantly improved the global symp toms which combined evaluation of abdomi nal pain, flatulence, and an altered bowel hab it [62], There has been evaluation of other drugs that are believed to be antispasmodic, but their exact mode of action is still unclear. Mcbcvcrinc is a phcnylethylamine derivative of reserpine which is believed to relax smooth muscle without anticholinergic side effects.…”
