“…8,9 Cidofovir is a nucleoside analogue of deoxycytidine monophosphate that has potent antiviral effects in vitro and in vivo against several herpesviruses of human and veterinary importance. [10][11][12][13] For example, topical application of cidofovir at concentrations of 0.02 to 0.1 mg/mL is effective for treating New Zealand White rabbits with keratitis attributable to infection with herpes simplex virus (HSV)-1, and cidofovir is widely used to treat people with retinitis associated with cytomegalovirus infection. [14][15][16] In vitro efficacy of cidofovir against FHV-1 has been documented.…”

“…Several herpesvirus antivirals licensed for human medicine have been evaluated for use in veterinary patients, including cats (Groth et al, 2013), horses (Garre et al, 2007(Garre et al, , 2009 and cattle (Korvasova et al, 2012). Calves with a latent BHV-1 infection had reduced clinical signs and viral replication when given a single dose of 20 mg/kg of (S)-1-(3-hydroxy-2-phosphonyl-methoxypropyl) cytosine (HPMPC) one day prior to iatrogenic recrudescence of the infection by corticosteroid administration (Gilliam and Field, 1993). However, viral shedding was not eliminated nor was establishment of latency prevented, presumably leaving treated calves capable of transmitting the virus to susceptible cohorts.…”

“…This included various animal models for herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) and type 2 (HSV-2) but also murine and rat cytomegalovirus (CMV), equine herpesvirus type 1 (EHV-1) 189 and bovine herpesvirus type 1 (BHV-1). 190 The activity of cidofovir against EHV-1 was recently confirmed (and extended to PMEDAP), 191 and both cidofovir and PMEDAP were also found active against feline herpesvirus type 1 (FHV-1). 192,193 Of direct veterinary importance, Fontenelle et al 194 found that topical ophthalmic application of cidofovir significantly decreased the amount of viral shedding and the severity of clinical disease in cats with experimentally induced ocular FHV-1 infection.…”
