The Effect of RFSSW Parameters on the Load Bearing Capacity of Aluminum 7075-T6 Sheet Metal Joints

Abstract: Friction Stir Spot Welding is one of the most contemporary methods of joining metals and alloys in their solid state. The ability to join elements made of aluminum alloys allows for utilizing this method in the manufacturing of aircraft structures while lowering the work load, costs, and weight, without sacrificing or even having better strength parameters than classic methods of joining elements. It ensures constant joint parameters, however it requires the use of optimal welding parameters such as: the rotat… Show more

“…However, determining the correct welding parameters causes multiple problems. The quality of RFSSW spot welds depends on such welding parameters as" plunge depth [13,14], tool rotational speed [9,14,15] and welding times [9,14], which are a subject of analysis of numerous researches. Unfortunately, these articles offer no information regarding the degree of weakening of the welded sheet obtained by RFSSW method.…”

“…Many advantages are related to spot welding, causing a decline in the riveting and gluing of Al alloys: (i) the drilling of parts and the use of rivets as additional fasteners are not required; (ii) a great resistance to corrosion can be achieved for welded joints; (iii) the possibility to perform simple repairs of joints; (iv) no part of the joint extends beyond the surface of the joined elements. The optimization of the RFSSW parameters to get the best mechanical performances of joints has been studied by many authors [66][67][68][69][70].…”
