The Effect of PowerPoint Instruction on High School Students’ Achievement and Motivation to Learn Geometry

Abstract: This study explored the effect of PowerPoint integration on students’ motivation and achievement in less endowed Senior High Schools (SHSs). The study employed the embedded mixed method approach involving quasi-experimental design in which 80 students were randomly selected from two government-assisted Senior High Schools and assigned to control and experimental groups. Teacher-made Pre- and Post-Geometry Achievement Tests (GAT) and semi-structured interviews were used to collect quantitative and qualitative d… Show more

“…The developed interactive PowerPoint media contains an attractive and proportional design and is easy for students to use. PowerPoint can be used to create interactive media from learning materials by incorporating visual and audio components into presentation slides and can be shared via platforms for use by students with the help of computers, laptops and gadgets (Mensah & Nabie, 2021;Praheto et al, 2020). The results of validation with experts also show that the developed interactive PowerPoint media has used good and correct language rules.…”

“…Several research results report that the WhatsApp Group affects increasing learning outcomes (Oyewole et al, 2020), increases learning achievement (Pratama & Kartikawati, 2017), and improves the learning process (Awada, 2016;Baishya & Maheshwari, 2020;Rahaded et al , 2020). In addition, PowerPoint also has an impact on learning (Akhlaghi & Zareian, 2015;Erdemir, 2011;Mensah & Nabie, 2021;Meo et al, 2013). Videos distributed by teachers in the form of learning videos from the internet, for example, on YouTube, can attract students to participate in online learning activities (Moghavvemi et al, 2018;Orús et al, 2016;Rosyad, 2021).…”

“…Engagement theory is used as the theoretical base underpinning this study. Previous studies, (Kearsley & Shneiderman, 1999;Marshall, 2007;Mensah & Nabie, 2021), on technology integration in education used the Engagement theory as their theoretical bases. Engagement Theory (ET) is a framework for technology-based teaching, whose underlying idea is that students must be meaningfully engaged in learning activities through interaction with others and worthwhile tasks (Kearsley & Shneiderman, 1999).…”

“…The participants' entry characteristics and level of attainment after treatment was completed were measured using two similar GATs adopted from (Mensah & Nabie, 2021). The GAT contain questions involving concepts on area and perimeter of plane shapes and was made up of two sections, section A and B.…”
