The Effect of Platelet-Rich Fibrin and Hyaluronic Acid on Perforation of Nasal Septum

Abstract: Background Conservative approaches and surgical methods have been tried for the treatment of nasal septum perforations (NSPs), but a satisfactory method has not yet been determined. Objective Our study aimed to investigate the effect of platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) and hyaluronic acid (HA) in repairing NSPs, which were experimentally created in rabbit septum. Methods A total of 36 white New Zealand rabbits were included in the study. Perforations measuring 0.7 × 0.7 cm were created in their nasal septa. No addit… Show more

“…Thus, reducing the size of the perforation may lead to symptom improvement. Therefore, several topical agents have been investigated for the healing of perforations in a rat or rabbit model [ [14] , [15] , [16] , [17] , [18] , [19] , [20] , [21] ]. However, effects vary, and no consensus has been reached regarding which agent and method are considered effective.…”

“…They reported that the NSP treatment success rate was 66.7% in the hyaluronic acid group, 66.7% in the PRF group, and 77.8% in the hyaluronic acid + PRF group. They found that the use of PRF and/or Hyaluronic acid in NSP treatment increased the success rate 28 . Yücebaş et al used polypropylene mesh as interpositional graft material in nasal septal perforation repair and found that it increased the perforation closure rate from 25% to 75%.…”

They detected varying degrees of inflammatory response in all subjects and showed that 25% of the subjects had a foreign body reaction.…”

“…In a rabbit model of nasal septal perforations, Celik et al showed the use of platelet-rich fibrin and hyaluronic acid together had good healing, suggesting a potential therapeutic application during surgical repair of perforations. 14 Surgical techniques are also discussed in 2 fascinating manuscripts by McCormick et al and Tawfik et al A multiinstitutional retrospective chart review showed that the modified endoscopic Denker's approach for anterior maxillary sinus tumors was safe and effective for benign and malignant pathology, however, clinicians should counsel patients on risks such as epiphora and palate numbness. 15 Tawfik et al showed in a preclinical cadaveric model followed by clinical case series that the nasal spine of the frontal bone and its relationship to the nasal branch of the anterior ethmoid artery are consistent landmarks to utilize during outside-in frontal drill outs to avoid skull base injury.…”
